When you’re not experiencing your Divine Essence, it’s because your mind is distracted. Patanjali offers this practice: “When your mind is distracted or disturbed, contemplate your experience of dreaming or dreamless sleep.” Yoga Sutras 1.36. Gurudevi explains that this is not psychology. You contemplate the experience of dreaming and of deep sleep, rather than analyzing it. In the yogic system, contemplation is a way of getting beyond your mind to a deeper inner knowing. The purpose is to find the One who is experiencing, who is the One who is always aware.
