It means that your own individual spiritual practices and your growing progress toward enlightenment uplifts you and the whole world. You care and your caring changes where the world is headed.

Yoga doesn’t promise that you’ll be free from pain. Yoga promises that you will live in the bliss of your own Beingness. What do you want to focus on, even while the pain is there? Yoga gives you the skill to shift your internal gaze to whatever you choose. While you focus on the greater Reality within, yoga also offers many simple yet powerful tools for pain. Still, life doesn’t become perfect, and the world’s pain doesn’t go away. In fact, pain is the motivator that makes people change. The guru’s job is not to get rid of your pain but to free you from your limited idea of yourself.

Gurudevi explains that the yogic sense of equanimity is about more than even-mindedness. Equanimity is one of the qualities of being established in the Self. This inward deepening into Self frees you from emotional reactivity. Describing her own experience, Gurudevi says, “Yoga gave me a superpower: the ability to choose how I wanted to feel. I was freed from the ups and downs.”  Yet equanimity is not the goal. It is a sign that you are deepening within as you progress toward enlightenment.
